There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling den gambling is not legal. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; still, funding sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, features 150 one armed bandits and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel compound that features a number of luxuries accompanying the gambling den, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and eighty eight gaming tables.
